"It's Christmas Eve-Eve!"

That is what my kids have been shouting all day! The noise level in our house has been high enough to warrant ear plugs for most of the day...nothing is more fun than having a house full of kids at Christmas time though! Even my big kids get into the excitement of things, which adds to the fun. I think they have all realized that we only have ONE more Christmas left with all of us at home together before Alex leaves the nest.....don't get me started on that. I have cried enough already.

Not to let that put a damper on things though....we are truly in the Christmas spirit at our house. We are looking forward to the long trek to Utah with 7 people and a dog in the car for 12 hours!! Don't be too jealous of all the cozy family time we are going to have. It is always a miracle when we pull in without anyone being severely injured by another sibling. Those last few hours are pure joy!

Well, I have a few more presents to wrap and maybe a few more goodies to bake for Santa...he has a hearty appetite this year, and then I think Pa and I can look forward to at least 5 hours of sleep before the gang comes in to wake us bright and early!
I am so excited to see our family and spend the week playing games and eating and laughing....we will miss your family Amy!! sniff....sniff...
I will look forward to reading everyone's blogs when I return.

Merry Christmas from the Martinsen gang!!

"All Aboard!!"

We had a great adventure last week when we took the family on the Polar Express! You boardthe train in a little tiny town called Williams, AZ. It is about 3 hours north of Phoenix. They have the whole town (all one street of it) decked out for Christmas and then the train depot is Christmas galore. It is a re-enactment of the movie, complete with the conductor and all.
On the train, they serve hot cocoa and cookies and they read "The Polar Express" as elves walk up and down the isles showing the kids the pictures. Then everyone sings Christmas carols together and you look out the windows at the "North Pole".....Santa boards the train and gives each child a bell.
The whole thing takes about an hour. It was so much fun. Even our big kids liked it and enjoyed watching their little sisters, who were having a blast!
It was fun to be COLD even though it didn't snow, but at least we got to get all bundled up and feel wintery! Our hotel was like a little cabin with big cozy comforters.
I would recommend this little adventure to anyone. It is something really festive and fun to do with the kids.
Of course our camera battery died after only a few pictures, so this is about all we got. Sorry about that.....I didn't even get any of the train...ugh!!

I think by the end of the night, Lora was a little too stunned to speak much. She was being a bit camera shy here. We had such a GREAT time!! The best part for us moms was watcing our girls. They were so excited and HYPER! Oddly enough, my day started off in the hospital with Emma having her colonoscopy and then ended with the concert....... that's that you call "the best of both worlds"
Thanks for an awesome night girls!! I love you Lora.
I hope all the video clips that I posted actually work

I wasn't able to get a picture of Abe before he flew out of the house on his roller blades dressed as a hippie....he looked great! He was too anxious to hook up with the guys for the haunted house down the street! All the kids had fun. We hung out in our circle most of the night having a BBQ with the neighbors. The weather was perfect. That's one of the great things about AZ ....the kids don't have to freeze in their costumes!

Global Economics

So, that title is supposed to make you think that I am really smart. Actually that is just one of the many reasons that I haven't taken the time to update my blog recently. I volunteered to teach Junior Achievement for the 6th grade at Abe's school this year. The subject is Global Economics and I will teach twice a week for 3 weeks. So, in between all my many other daily mom duties, I am trying to educate myself on this subject. Mind you, it has been a LONG time since I have been in the studying mode. It isn't that hard actually they have it pretty much scripted out for you....but I guess I like to be the overachiever and actually make it INTERESTING and EXCITING. Anyway, I have been having alot of fun with it. Actually the best part is when I walk in the classroom, they all start clapping and I kind of feel like Oprah! (well not really, but close!)

So, a little update on the colonoscopy calendar at our house....Mariah is cleansing today, in preparation for hers tomorrow morning. So far, everything is coming out all right. (ha ha) Just lots of Gatorade and Charmin around here today. We are having a little issue with Alex though....who has decided to flat out boycott his participation at all! Part of our FHE last week was dedicated to this lovely subject and I thought it might be a good idea to tell them what to expect. Alex basically freaked out and reverted to his 2 year old method of "you can't make me" tantrum. The hard part is that when he was 2, I really COULD make him do things, but now that he is actually bigger than me, not to mention a whole lot stronger.....it is a whole different game! We were all laughing our heads off, and since the focus was on Alex throwing his little tantrum, the other kids didn't even register that they were going to have one too...so at least we didn't have to deal with all of them freaking out at the same time. whew! I decided to call the office the next day and get specifics on what would occur at the pre-procedure visit...hoping I could ease Alex's mind just a little. Turns out it was news he wouldn't like. Too bad Mariah heard me on the phone with the nurse and a couple days later spilled the beans to Alex that yes indeed a rectal exam would be part of the visit! Well, as he was going off about how there was NO WAY that he was going to let DR. MONTES go anywhere near him while he was awake... blah blah blah....I couldn't help myself by saying, "you mean his assistant, Miss EVA???" (they told me she would be doing it) okay, I will just let all of you picture what came next.....needless to say, Alex about turned himself inside out with horror!! I am still secretly laughing about it. So......how DO you get a 17 year old, fully conscious male with muscle to submissively accompany his mother and siblings to the GUT DOCTOR and lie down on the table???? Somehow I don't think a McDonald's happy meal reward is going to work this time.
So I ask you my fellow bloggers.........WHAT IN THE HECK SHOULD I DO??

Finally ...a new post

Actually, not really....this is just to let you know that as soon as I actually have TIME, I am going to update my blog!
(now wasn't that worth the 45 seconds that it took me to write?)

General Conference

I figured you were all getting tired of looking at that "butt" so I better write a new post! Well, I am sure we all agree that Gen. Conference is just the best weekend of the year! IT is so fun to lounge around and snuggle and eat and play games in between and just be together as a family. We always get new coloring books...even my big kids want them! Our conference food tradition is that I make chili and scones. We have been doing that ever since the kids were little and it has become a fun thing. Abe always gets to be my helper actually making the scones. We have a big breakfast too and then snacks set out all day, so pretty much we all need to fast tomorrow!
For today's sessions (Sunday) we had a non-member girl with us that is friends with Alex and Mariah. She is 16. Such a great girl, and she totally soaked up every word of conference. The spirit was very strong. It is amazing how much more you get out of it when you are listening through the ears of someone hearing it for the first time.
I feel so re-motivated to be better in every way. I am so thankful to be a member of this church and have the knowledge that we do.
I love my family so much....especially my sisters who I miss terribly! I hope you all had a great weekend as well.
Hey it was even a little tiny bit chilly this morning when we woke up! yeah!! I was jealous all day of the snow that Utah was getting though!

Looks like I should have married a "Gut Doctor"

Well, our wonderful "Gut Doctor" is going to score big time with the Martinsen clan, seeing as he gets to do all 7 of us before the end of the year! Heck, maybe we should just have the dog done too while we are at it. I am wondering what kind of treat would be approriate for a FHE that starts with a colonoscopy for everyone???

Well, for those of you who don't know the history here.....about 6 months ago, our then 7 year old Lora started having some abdominal pain that led to finding out she had several polyps in her large intestine, the largest of which was causing the pain and also causing her colon to fold or "telescope" into itself, which would be fatal if not fixed. Anyway, to make a long story short, she spent 10 days in the hospital and had to have surgery to have that part of her colon removed and also she had a colonoscopy which revealed several more polyps that were also removed.

Last Friday we had another appt. and because these Juvenile Polyps have a 30-70% rate of turning into the "C" word....she needed to have another colonoscopy, which was a few days later, just this past Tuesday. Lora is a trooper and put on a very brave face for the other kids...since they are also looking at having one within probably the next 6 weeks or so. (This is genetic, so they need to be checked also, as well as Lane and I....yeah!!)

The worst part for her is the prep, which in the hospital was a tube in the nose, feeding her this nasty liquid overnight....but this time we did the prep at home and it was actually harder for her. Anyone that knows Lora knows that she has the most abnormal phobia of puking that you have ever seen. She truly needs counseling over this issue....she is psychotic about it!!! So, once the liquid made her puke, that was it. She would have nothing more to do with it! That meant I had to resort to enemas for her. That was fun. Actually easier on her than drinking the poop juice though, so she was a good sport about it.

So very early Tuesday morning, we head to the hospital for the procedure. They take us back into what now Lora and I have dubbed as the "Fart Wing" of the hospital. She gets the one and only Winnie the Pooh (no pun intended) room since most of these people are WAAAAAAY past the third grade! So we get Lora changed into her little gown and she is laying there shivering in anticipation....when all of a sudden we start hearing what sounds like a whole brass section of the Phil-Harmonic orchestra blaring out from behind various curtains across the hall! Then a nurse shouts out "Way to go, whoever did that one....that was a SIX FOOTER!!.....that's what I want to hear people....give me some more SIX FOOTERS!!!" Lora's eyes got as big as Texas and she was like, "MOM are those toots???" (we try not to use the "F" word in our house) I was swallowing so hard, trying not to just burst out laughing! I don't really know why, but in our house, growing up, toots were just plain FUNNY and something we always laughed about! This went on for seriously about 30 minutes. I did not know that gas could be so melodious....and you know that little bird's eye called a fermata that we see over notes that means you are supposed to hold it out long? Well, let me tell you, these toots had some serious long fermatas over them!! We are talking world record breakers! It was like they were all having a contest behind their curtains! Anyway, at least this got Lora and I laughing and made her relax a little. The good part is that all this gas was coming from clean colons, so at least there was no smell involved!

Well, she had her procedure and they did remove 5 more polyps! Hopefully they all test normal and she can be good for another few years.

So, I will keep you updated on the rest of us. My kids would die if they knew I was blogging about this!! Hey, I am going to have to sneak a picture of the other 4 of them lined up on the big day don't ya think?? What posts on the blog stays on the blog right?

I'll have to let you know which one of them rips some SIX FOOTERS!! It will probably be my 4 year old, knowing her!

I do have to say though, that there is absolutely no pain involved in a colonoscopy. I think what keeps most people from getting them, is probably the embarrassement of it. If you are modest like I am, then that is probably the worst part. But hey, we need to remember that colon cancer is a silent killer and you don't know you have it until you have symptoms and then it is often too late. Please encourage your parents to get them and if you have any symptoms (bleeding being the most common) please get one. I think all of us would agree that a little embarrassement is worth something that can save your life!

Time out for Women

All I can say is that if you have never been.....you better make it a priority for next year! It was FABULOSO!!! I was having so much fun that I didn't even take my camera out of the purse to take any pictures of our group. Someone did though and I am waiting for them to e-mail them to me. It was so much fun and such a "fill your cup" experience! I have never laughed and cried so much at the same time. We had Michael McLean,Michael Wilcox (who did remember me by the way...used to be my Bishop) and Jenny Jordan Frogley just to name a few of the presenters. There was also a lady who did a presentation called "Wife 101" and it was SO DANG FUNNY!! I wish my sisters could have been there with me. I had fun with our group that went though. There were 25 of us and we stayed overnight Friday night. It was a blast.
I will be put in "time out" any time!!!

Never thought I'd love a dog!!

Maybe I am desperate as to what to blog about, but my little pooch has not been feeling good for a couple days and so he has been getting extra TLC from me. I have never been a dog lover, but this little guy has a soft spot with me. We have had him for almost a year, which is a record long time for a pet of any sort in this house! His name is Higley and he is a mini pekingnese. Whenever any one meets him for the first time, my 8 year old Lora is quick to point out that his nose is smashed, but nothing is wrong with him, that is just the way he came! He has been a great dog for us. Very mellow and low maintenance. I realized that I had become a true "dog mom" when I put him in the shower with me yesterday! He needed a bath and I thought he had a fever, so.....anyway, I am really justifying myself huh? Is that just plain wierd???

Well, I am headed to "Time out for Women" tonight with a group of friends. I will blog about that when I return. Have a great weekend everyone!!
p.s. I tried to shrink the picture and it squished his face a little wierd....I don't know how to fix it! Great, now he really does look deformed!!! oh well.

Cell Phone Wars!

ok, I was on my way to bed tonight but thought I might blog about the last 30 minutes of my evening and see what the general concensus is out there on kids having cell phones. My 11 year old son has been all but down on his hands and knees (well he has probably done that a few times actually) begging us to get him a cell phone! Really for no other reason than ALL and I mean ALL of his friends have one! They are in 6th grade!! And to make matters worse, most of them have had a cell phone for at least a year now. He relaxes for a few days about this request and then at the convenient time of bedtime at least twice a week, he will start the whole thing over again. I am really getting worn out with it. He said tonight that he doesn't feel safe riding his bike to school without a cell phone, in case someone tries to snatch him. Do you think he is just pulling at my mother heart strings with that one??? So I said fine...you win. "I will drive you to school and pick you up everyday!" Not quite the compromise he was looking for, but it quieted him down for a few minutes anyway until he could think another reason he had to have one, which was: in case I forgot to pick him up one day then he could call me! (good one)

I just have a problem with young kids having cell phones. If your kids have them, please don't be offended by me. I just feel strongly about giving kids things too early and leaving them nothing to look forward to. Also, my main reason is that I hate the constant "connection" to friends that a cell phone provides. None of us would ever dream of putting a private phone line into our kids rooms and paying for it, but that is what a cell phone is! I don't like not knowing who they are talking to and when...when they are in the 6th grade!!! Now, do my teenagers have them??? YES. There does come a point where it is more for my convenience for them to have one, especially when they are driving and dating. I know that there are situations where kids need one, if they are involved in alot of extra curricular activities maybe, so don't think I am a cell phone hater! I just can't stand it when I see little kids running around with them. It just really gets under my skin.

I am kind of on one tonight huh??? maybe I should have just gone to bed.....but I just wanted to blog this out with all of you. give me your opinions. It probably won't change my mind, but at least it will let me know if I am the ONLY mom that lives in the dark ages and deprives her children of the necessities of life!!

ahhhh....Homecoming

Well, I can't even believe it, but my baby boy is now a Senior in High School and went to his last fall Homecoming dance tonight! sniff...sniff....I used to think just "old people" said stuff like, "where did the time go??" but I am sure saying it these days! It doesn't seem real that kids grow up so fast.

Alex looked so handsome and his date Catelyn was darling. (was I ever that tiny???) They started their day at 6am going wakeboarding on a nearby lake. A man in our ward was nice enough to take them. Then they went back to Alex's date's house where her mom made breakfast for the group. They watched a movie...or tried to anyway, because they all fell asleep. Then Alex came home and had a longer nap and a shower and off they went. They ate at a friend's house for dinner to save money, Lane let Alex take the truck, which Alex was very happy about! and then I think they were going Cosmic Bowling. And all the fun ends at midnight sharp!! How is that for a LONG FABULOUS DATE.

Well, I feel lucky that Alex has a great group of friends and I know they are all good kids. I feel really blessed that my highschoolers don't give me any major problems. When I look at what some other families are going through...I will take a son that can't remember to hang up his wet towel ANY DAY!!

Well, Lane and I had an exciting date out to TGIF (food was terrible by the way) and then to Wal-mart to buy some supplies for the office. I am sure Alex had a much more romantic time than we did! How does that happen???

Well, we did manage to hold hands and flirt across the table. We had homecoming groups all around us in the restaurant (sorry for the girls whose date chose TGIF) and we were doing a little reminiscing.....still in love after 19 years.....sorry to be cheesey :)
oh...and by the way...I DIDN'T have dessert! :)

I have an announcement...

Ha ha, I bet I had you all a bit scared for a moment.....no I am not pregnant! I actually have another announcement to make that is even more severe than that. I have decided to make the month of September my "no dessert" month. (sorry Kristen, I had already decided this before I knew you were coming) This may seem like a small thing to some of you, but for me it is HUGE! I am just a dessert FREAK and so I decided to challenge myself a bit.
Why would I do this to myself you might ask??? Well, a couple reasons. One being that I have been reading an awesome book lately, I mean REALLY studying it. It is "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. Quite a popular book, but I had always thought it was some kind of a business book and wasn't all that interested. Well, I came upon it and started reading it and have been so absorbed in it. It is such a great book about how to really get what you want out of life. A RICH life means far more than just money. IT has caused me to want to set goals for myself in areas where I haven't really before. It is all about the power of positive thinking. Maybe I will be able to think better if I don't overload my brain with sugar!
The no dessert thing is more of an issue of self control with me and also, I get mild headaches alot and I really think they may be due to the package of cookies that I down on a regular basis. I think for me, this will just help me to set a goal that is hard, yet something that I can really stick to. This means that I will definately have to find something to occupy my Sunday nights with now, because that is the night when I ALWAYS make a yummy dessert.
So anyway, making this announcement to all of you on my blog is so that I am truly accountable and far less likely to cheat!
Now, I know that Kristen is probably just totally bummed right now...you are thinking that your trip here to see me is going to be no fun at all right?? Well, just remember, that as Mormons, we don't drink either, but we still have fun right! ha ha I will be fun, I promise. I just have to do this!
k, so feel free to give me encouragement or hey better yet, even JOIN me for this little dessert fast. I will keep you all posted as to how I am doing. Let's hope that we don't hear on the nightly news that some deranged woman broke into a convenience store and managed to get away with 5 packages of Oreos!

"If the mountain were smooth, you couldn't climb it"

Now and then I hear something that really sticks in my brain....this was one of those quotes that I recently heard, that really resonated with me. Since I have nothing wonderful to blog about, I thought I could at least share an inspiring thought with you all. You are welcome.
I did have a great time with my sisters in Utah! We had lots of laughs and tears, and thanks to Amy's family...even some vomit.
Every time I leave Utah, I say to myself...."why do I live in the hot ugly desert????" I guess because this is where my husband and kids are. hmmm....
I have had such a crazy busy day, that I can't even think to blog. I will leave you to ponder on my very inspirational thought.

OK, clearly I don't know how to blog...as you can see, my pics each posted as a separate post and my whole write up about San Diego is not even here! I don't know what I am doing! I need Amy to go in and fix all this for me. So forgive my retardedness if you are wondering why in the heck I posted all those pics separately. When I get to Utah next week, I need a serious Blog seesion with you Amy! I can't wait to come!!

San Diego Trip

I am back from San Diego and want to report that we had a BLAST! I had never been there before and so it was all new to me. The weather was perfect and aside from the few moments where Becky and I wanted to jump off a cliff because of screaming children in the car.... and the part where I got pooped on by a bird at Seaworld ( I am talking, it was like DRIPPING off of my eyebrow!!)......everything was just perfect.
Here are a few pics from the trip. Becky and I went to the San Diego temple and did a session on Friday morning. I think it is the most beautiful temple I have ever seen. I could not hold back the tears once we were inside. We did take pictures outside, but you won't get to see them because the dress I was wearing makes me look like a milk cow and I am just far too vain to post it. So, you will just have to imagine Becky and I looking radiant amongst the flowers and beauty of the temple.

Great Family Movies!

Lane and I went to the video store last weekend to hopefully find something that would be good for the whole family to watch. We happened upon a series of 4 movies done by Michael Landon Jr. and based on the books by Jannette Oke. They are such great movies! Our whole family loved them. The first one is called "Love comes Softly". There are 4 of them, so make sure you watch them in order. We all know how rare it is to find movies that are clean and wholesome these days, so I wanted to pass these on.
Well, I am off to San Diego tomorrow....so excited! I will take lots of pictures so I can post when I get back! I will kiss Shamu for all of you!!

Back in the Routine

Well, I figured I better find something to blog about so that I can get my birthday one off of here. 3 of my 5 kids are back in school now (the little girls still have almost 2 more weeks off) so the family is back on a routine again which feels really good. After sleeping in almost everyday this summer, I am actually happy to be up at 5:55am again and getting the day started. I leave the house to work out at 6:15 and get home at 7:30, still have all morning to get things done around the house. Sometimes I feel a little draggy by 3 or 4pm, but nothing that a 15 minute power nap won't take care of.
Abe is in his last year of elementary (6th grade) at a brand new school just opened right in our neighborhood this year. He is loving it. Gets to do safety patrol! Mariah is a sophomore and Alex is a SENIOR!!! IF I was a better mom, I would have first day of school pictures to post, but I don't think I have done that for several years! It poured rain yesterday and some of them were swimming in the pool as it was raining.....it would have been a great picture but the camera battery was dead, so sorry.
Well, I am looking forward to a weekend trip to SanDiego with Becky and her kids next week! I am taking Lora and Emma and we get to go to Sea World! (thanks for the free tickets Becky!) That should be a blast. I haven't been anywhere all summer and I can't go to my family reunion for various reasons, so I am really looking forward to this!!! I will try to take lots of pics so I can post when I get back.
I can't wait to come to Utah next month for 9 whole days!!! yippeeee!!! my sisters and mom better be ready to have some FUN!!

Happy Birthday to me!

Well, the second half of my birthday was much better than the first half. I don't know what my problem was this morning, but I woke up very sad and couldn't manage to pull myself out of it until about 5pm! I managed to take a shower and then go to the all exciting Wally world to pick up some Miracle Whip. (can you tell I thought hard for a reson to escape??)Lane and the kids finally convinced me to go with them out to dinner.....that is all but my eldest hunk, who is too busy working out at the gym these days to give his family the honor of his presence! I guess it is a natural thing that happens in life.....but still a little hard when mom isn't top dog anymore. Kind of hard to see your kids grow up, but I guess that kind of stuff happens when you are 39!! I can't even believe I am that old. I guess I have one more good year in me.
Like I said, Lane and my 4 children who love me, took me to one of my favorite restaurants, "The Elephant Bar". It was very yummy and fun to be with my family. We tried to take a cute pic to post on my blog but the darn battery died in the camera, so you will just have to imagine me and my children all sitting quietly and being very well mannered as we ate. NOT!! Abe and Emma were acting a bit crazy tonight, but no one kicked us out so I guess it was ok.
Well, my day started off sad because I have been missing my family so much lately! And my best friend has been out of town for a week! (thanks Becky!) I guess that means I am blessed to have people to miss so much. My sisters both said very nice happy birthday things to me on their blogs...made me cry....and Becky called me and let me cry to her for an hour. What are friends for huh?
I am so excited go home to Utah next month and hang out with my mom and brothers and sisters who are the GREATEST! I love you and can't wait to see you.
I am sure that this year will end up being wonderful, just like the last 38 years have been. I guess we have to have a bad day now and then to help us really appreciate the good ones.

Bored kids!

This is a rare picture, so I thought I would post it. 3 of my kids actually reading a book without me asking them to!

Emma Got a Haircut!

Emma finally agreed to get her haircut yesterday! We had to convince her that she would still look like a princess.....she is obsessed with Princesses. I for one am not a fan of little girls with long hair....since it seems that Emma, at least was always getting food in her hair. Since she loves to dip everything in Ranch dressing, that seemed to be the scent of her hair frequently. She also would cry every time I had to brush it out. Anyway...we think she looks adorable with her new do!

Lora's Baptism

I was just thinking tonight that I don't think I sent any pics of Lora's baptism to the family. It was a special day, although a little bit sad without any family here, but I guess that is what happens when you move away. Her friends from school came and even her teacher for this upcoming year came! Lora is such a bright spot in our family. She makes us laugh all the time.

Blog rhymes with Frog....so why not???

Well, after feeling left out of the blogger world every time I read my sisters blogs...I decided to sacrifice a little sleep time and stay up late tonight to set up a blog! I just used the word BLOG alot huh? I always wish that I was a late night productive person, but usually as soon as the house is quiet and I could actually do something I really need or want to do...I just feel myself dropping off to sleep. I guess that means that I work too hard during the day right? Please agree with me, otherwise I just feel lazy.
I know that I will enjoy doing this and sharing my life with my sisters and friends (if I ever get a friend that blogs because right now I don't.....hmm.. I have to do some recruiting.) I think that blogging might be therapeutic because I always laugh at the stories my sisters write about, even though I KNOW they are not laughing! Somehow it is easier to see the humor when it is not your kid that left the banana peel in the backpack for 2 months or lost the hamster in the house. Maybe I will actually see the humor in what my kids do instead getting completely frustrated!ok, well I feel good now that I actually did something productive and everyone in my house is asleep!
